Promise Not to Tell
Jennifer McMahon
Book Review:

Jennifer Mcmahon's Promise Not to Tell: A Novel, is both engrossing and disturbing, vacillating between the time of fall of 2002 and 31 years prior. It is an ambitious novel, combining elements of a ghost story, mystery and coming-of-age tale.

The book follows Kate Cypher who, while returning to her Vermont hometown to care for her elderly mother, is thrust back into the case of the unsolved murder of her childhood friend, Del Griswold. Kate rediscovers her grade school crush, Del's brother, who is convinced Del is haunting the woods in which she was killed and seeking revenge. When another girl is killed in a similar manner, Kate must parcel out the truth behind Del's murder, in turn leading to some stunning revelations about the people from her youth.

Promise Not to Tell is an impressive debut novel and, despite jumping between time periods, never seems disjointed or confusing. Mcmahon succeeds in writing a chilling and haunting tale, all the while including themes of the supernatural, child abuse and friendship.

Author Info:

Promise Not to Tell is Jennifer Mcmahon's debut novel. She has two new books - My LaSamba Blues and Rabbit Island - in the works that will be available in Summer 2008.

"When I began Promise, I knew I wanted to write a ghost story. And when I sat down to start, I began with an image of a dead crow. I soon saw a dirty little hand stroking the crow, then I panned back and got the full picture of a young girl. I had an immediate sense of who she was. And I knew she was going to be my ghost," Mcmahon writes on her Amazon profile.

"I based my whole book around that character, Del Griswold, the Potato Girl. She's dirty, poor and dresses in hand-me-downs from her older brothers. She lies, manipulates and is, in many ways, a victim, but she's got a spirit that can't be beat (even, perhaps, by death itself...)"
